What is a Fellow?

A writing fellow is an undergraduate student currently enrolled at York College, who has successfully completed Teaching and Tutoring Writing (WRT 290). Fellows assist in all three sections of the freshman writing classes and offer their services as peer tutors in the Writing Center. Fellows work closely with the professor of their freshman class to provide the students with enhanced learning opportunities. Fellows can work with their professor to create handouts, powerpoint presentations, class discussions, mini lessons, and more.  All writing fellows are hired by the Center for Teaching and Learning Director.

WRT 290 Course Curriculum:
  • Analyzing of current theories on the teaching and tutoring of writing

  • Application of theories to actual teaching and tutoring situations

  • Observation of tutors and writing teachers in the Writing Center and classroom

  • Assessment and commenting of actual samples of student writing

  • Development of assignments for teaching writing

  • Improvement of one's own writing

Benefits of Having a Fellow:
  • There is another person with a defined set of skills to help with classroom assignments, discussion, and workshops.

  • There is another knowledgable person students can go to or email for help or with questions.

  • Because writing fellows work closely with the professor, they are more knowledgeable of assignment requirements when students from the class come to the Writing Center.
